From the rocky mountains of Colorado to the wide open plains of Texas, there are plenty of places in the USA that are perfect for off-road camping trips. So pack your camping gear and get ready for an adventure!
Here are our 10 favorite states in the USA for off-road adventures.
With its rocky mountains and vast open plains, Colorado is a paradise for off-roaders and campers alike. There are plenty of trails to explore, and you can find campsites in some of the most beautiful locations in the state. Some of its best trails include the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway, which takes you through the stunning San Juan Mountains, and the Imogene Pass, which is one of the highest off-road trails in the country. Imogene Pass, near Ouray , is the second highest off-road trail in Colorado. Part of the trail includes a lot of old mining debris, but it can be dangerous to veer off to explore those areas.
Another great state for off-roading and camping is Utah. It has some of the most varied and beautiful landscapes in the USA. Moab and Sand Hollow are the most popular destinations in Utah, but there are plenty of other great places to explore. Some of its best off-road trails include Cliff Hanger, Poison Spider, and the Fins & Things. Of course, the entire Moab area is the king of all off-road driving, but you already knew that.
If you're looking for an off-road adventure in the desert, then Arizona is the place for you. It has some of the most challenging and beautiful off-road trails in the country. Some of its best trails include the Black Mesa OHV Trail, which takes you through the stunning Sonoran Desert, and the Apache Trail, which is a 40 mile trail that is partially paved. Our favorite is Backway to Crown King due to its challenge and beautiful views!
California is another great state for off-roading and camping. It has a huge variety of off-road trails, from easy ones perfect for beginners to challenging ones that will test even the most experienced off-roader. Some of its best off-road trails include the Rubicon Trail, which is one of the most famous off-road trails in the world, and the Fordyce Creek Trail, which is one of the most challenging off-road trails in California.
Nevada is another great state for off-roading. Trails such as the Loneliest Road in America are perfect for those looking for an easy on-and-off-roading experience, while the more challenging trails such as Hunter Lake Trail are perfect for those looking for a tougher challenge. And Amargosa Big Dune is always a great time!
Some New Mexico's best off-road trails include the Red Sands OHV Area. The Red Sands OHV area has a variety of hard-packed 4X4 routes and a vast track for off-roading. With its mesquite coppice dunes that span over 100 miles of trails, you can't go wrong with this New Mexico off-road route. Other notable trails are Red River Offroad and the Gonzo Trail.
The beautiful state of Oregon is great for the outdoorsman, and features various off-road trails such as Sand Lake, Rim Butte, and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. The Oregon dunes are a 40-mile stretch of wind whipped sand dunes that popular amongst the off-road community. If you plan on hitting this area, check out our whip flag mounts for the 4Runner and Tacoma. These also fit many other models of trucks or UTVs.
The state's vast open areas, mountains, and national forests provide an infinite variety of off-road possibilities for experienced and novice riders alike. Some pathways are simple to navigate while others are more difficult. Get the appropriate permits and passes before heading out on the best Washington State off-road routes to ensure that your off-road vehicle is capable of handling it. Ahtanum State Forest is a popular OHV route, and is a 29-mile loop and rated moderately challenging. There are a lot of areas to post up and camp after your trail ride. Other notable trails include Moses Lake Mud Flats and Juniper Dunes OHV area.
Alaska is a fantastic location to go off-road in Jeeps, ATVs, dirt bikes, and other vehicles. The state's national parks provide stunning views throughout the entire state. While certain parks do not allow ATVs (e.g., Denali National Park), there are plenty of miles of pathways and trail excursions to choose from that you may visit almost all of Alaska from behind the wheel. If you're looking for the popular routes, check out Chugach State Park or the Chena River State Recreation Area. You could spend weeks running all the available trails and fire roads across the state!
Texas is a wonderful state for open trail excursions owing to its long history of outdoor living. Not only are 4WD vehicles welcome, but they're also popular, so you'll receive a warm welcome. Some incredible scenery isn't the only thing that makes this place special: granite rock parks, dirt trails, beautiful hills and waterfalls with their tough streams and crossings are all part of the appeal. Texas has some of the most varied terrain in the country, including difficult climbs and deep creek crossings. One of our favorite spots is Trees Ranch Offroad, and it's not to far from us in Kerrville!
