Let’s talk about size- of propane tanks. For most overlanding adventures, a propane tank is quite the essential item. Used to fuel countertop stoves, outside grills, and even things as simple as a lantern, having this tank can enhance your overall overlanding experience. These tanks can range is size anywhere from 1lb all the way to 30lbs. So, does the size of the propane tank actually matter? Well, that depends on what you need it for. 

Small Propane Tanks - 1lb- These are often small, green canisters which screw into a small grill, stove, or other small propane-using device. The standard 1lb propane tank will typically provide approximately 1 ½ - 2 hours of cooking time on high heat. So basically, you can use it to cook a couple of meals. I’d say this one is pretty ideal for an afternoon on the trails, but not more than a day. One main downfalls of a 1lb tank are that majority of them are meant for one-time-use and should be disposed of properly after use. 

Medium Propane Tanks - 5lbs- 10lbs- Typically a 5lb-10lb propane tank will be perfect for a weekend getaway, or a fun filled family camping trip. A 5lb tank can last anywhere from 5-7 hours depending on the level of heat its being used at. We believe that investing in a 5 to 10lb tank is just what everyone needs. These sized tank can usually last for a multiple- day over-landing excursion or 5-10 hours of constant high heat cooking. That’s meals for the entire family, all weekend long! Not to mention these tanks are fairly small in comparison to the large tanks, so they can easily be mounted in your vehicle and taken with you.

Large Propane Tanks 20lbs -30lbs- OK. So, this one may be a little excessive, depending on what you are using it for. 20-30lb tanks are commonly used for larger barbecue grills, mosquito magnet, turkey fryer, and even small space heaters. As a rule of thumb, one of these sized propane will typically last anywhere between 18-20 hours if you're grilling on a medium-sized camp grill. Most off-roaders would rather not lug around a tank this size unless they absolutely have to. But hey, I doubt you’d run out of propane with this large tank!

Rather than lugging around a handful of the small tanks, we recommend getting a 5lb to 10lb tank to take with you! This size Propane Tank is the most popular size amongst the off-road community. Not only will it last through your entire weekend camping trip, but you can also make some really tasty meals! A medium sized propane tank can be stored in the same area you would put three to four 1lb tanks, but you’ll want to make sure no matter what tank you have, you never store it inside a hot vehicle. You can mount these tanks to your off-road rig in multiple different ways, but keep in mind you should ALWAYS make sure the tanks are in an upright position so it will not fall, shift, or roll when you're driving.
